What permissions does PriceGoose need, and are they optional?
Camera access is required to scan barcodes. Location is optional — a postal code gives identical results.
Short answer
PriceGoose asks for two permissions. Camera is required, because scanning a barcode is the whole point of the app. Location is optional — it saves you typing, but entering a Canadian postal code produces exactly the same results.
Camera
The camera is used only to read barcodes, and only while the Scan tab is open. Decoding happens on your phone. No photo, frame, or video is ever sent to us or stored anywhere.
If you declined the prompt, the Scan tab will not be able to see anything. Re-enable it:
- iPhone: Settings → PriceGoose → Camera.
- Android: Settings → Apps → PriceGoose → Permissions → Camera.
Location
Location is used to work out which grocery stores are near you. It is not stored against your account and is not used for anything else.
If you would rather not share it, skip the prompt and enter the postal code for the area where you shop. PriceGoose then treats that postal code as your location. You can change it at any time from the settings button on the Scan tab. See How do I change my location or search radius?.
Use the postal code option deliberately if you want prices for where you actually shop rather than where you happen to be standing.
