What should I check before relying on a price?

Review brand, product, package, offer conditions, and store location before making a trip or asking for a price match.

Short answer

Before you act on a scan result, confirm the product PriceGoose identified is the same product you are holding, and that the price has no condition attached. Same brand, same product, same size or count, same format.

A PriceGoose result reports what a retailer published. It is not a retailer’s promise, and it is not a price match that has been granted.

When to use this article

Use this checklist when a result shows a price worth acting on — driving to another store, or asking your current store to match it.

Check the result

  1. Check the brand. The brands should be the same. A store brand and a national brand at similar prices are different products.
  2. Check the product. Confirm both describe the same grocery item — same variety, flavour, cut, or format.
  3. Check the package. Compare size, count, weight, and package type. A 400 g package and a 500 g package are different items even when one has a better unit price.
  4. Check the price conditions. Watch for multibuy pricing, member-only prices, loyalty offers, app-only promotions, coupons, and limited-quantity offers. These frequently do not qualify as a straight lower price.
  5. Check the store. Confirm the price belongs to a location you can actually reach, and one your own store would consider local.
  6. Check how current it is. Retailer listings can lag the shelf, particularly in the first day or two of a flyer week.
  7. Confirm at the shelf. For anything you are relying on, the shelf tag is the final word.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating similar-looking products as identical from a small image
  • Comparing different package sizes by unit price alone
  • Missing a quantity condition such as “2 for $10”
  • Treating loyalty points as an immediate lower item price
  • Driving across town on a price you have not confirmed
  • Describing a PriceGoose result as already approved by a retailer
